Sweet Something is a bakery based in Vancouver, Canada.

In 2023, the bakery made news when a man broke into the bakery, took some selfies, and took off with half-a-dozen cupcakes. The bakery owner took this event as so absurdly hilarious and started to produce cupcakes topped with edible orange sunglasses, reminiscent of the ones the burglar wore at the time of the burglary.

2023 burglary

On May 26, 2023, around 3 a.m., a man looking to be in his 20s was recorded on CCTV footage at the glass door of the Sweet Something bakery[1] located in the Dunbar–neighbourhood of Vancouver.[2] He stalled at the glass door for about half an hour, eventually beginning to knock and shove himself at the door. He successfully shattered the glass by kicking it.[1] He maneuvered past the broken glass and began to explore the store, used the bathroom, and sat down on a chair in the span of another half an hour.[2] After that, he washed his hands, drank a glass of water behind the store's counter, and unsuccessfully tried to open the digital cash register[3][4] before grabbing a mop and trying to clean up the fragments of glass he left behind the door. Following these events, he took three selfies of himself, while wearing bright orange sunglasses, with the shop's iPhone. He left the shop with a box of half a dozen pink champagne-flavored chocolate cupcakes topped with buttercream icing from the bakery's fridge.[1][5][6][7] In total, the man was there for approximately an hour and ten minutes.[5]

Aftermath

A few hours after the burglary, the mother of the store's owner Emily Irvine called her to alert her about the break-in. Irvine said that "her heart dropped," after she heard this; the store was already struggling from the recent COVID-19 pandemic and a prior burglary. When reviewing the security footage, she was amused by how the break-in played out, and the fact that no valuables were taken; the Vancouver Police Department were also amused when they received the footage from Irvine. The police launched an investigation on the events, but have yet to make an arrest. Irvine contacted her insurance company and placed wood to temporarily replace the broken glass doors.[6][1][5]

Irvine posted a TikTok video explaining the events. To her surprise, the video gained over 2 million views.[6][3]

The day after the incident,[5] Irvine created a new cupcake called "the Crime of Passion," which used the same flavor the man stole, topped with an orange sunglasses-shaped sugar cookie, reminiscent of the ones the man wore when he was taking the selfies. The profits of the cupcakes and sugar cookies went to the cost of repairing the broken glass door.[3][6]

As Irvine was walking her dog three days after break-in, she received a call from her college saying that the thief reached out to the bakery and wanted to have a talk with her. When she reached him on her phone, he began apologizing for his "dumb mistakes," and said that he would pay the cost of the damages he made that day (around $850 in repairs) and offered Irvine the orange glasses he wore the day of the incident. After the call, Irvine made a request to the Vancouver Police to not press charges against him. She says that she felt sympathy for him, for he was just a young guy who made a mistake.

Irvine has stated that the robbery may have helped the business, as the incident led to her receiving orders from the United States.
